Outre le prestige de s'en porter acquéreur, l'édifice rapporte le prix des loyers des compagnies qui l'occupent et pourrait éventuellement être revendu pour plus cher encore. Sa construction achevée en 1930, l'immeuble de 77 étages et 319 mètres de l'architecte William Van Alen est une icône du mouvement architectural qu'on nomme art deco. On reconnaît ici ce style dans les longues lignes droites simples, dépouillées, coupées en angles droits, mais aussi par la célèbre flèche d'arches en acier inoxydable.
Cette transaction va faire grincer des dents certains new-yorkais. En effet, le rachat du Chrysler Building est symbolique de la vague de rachats de trésors immobiliers américains par des investisseurs des pays pétroliers.
